With a major dearth of new theatrical releases (I didn’t see Best Man Holiday since it’s a sequel to a 15 year old movie I’d never heard of), I gritted my teeth and went to see the turkey film Free Birds (about time-traveling turkeys trying to get themselves off the menu at the first Thanksgiving). It’s not as bad as I thought (hoped!?) it would be… I’ll give it that much. It’s a perplexing movie… it’s sense of humor is all over the place and just chock-a-block with random, nonsensical jokes that have no connecting theme. But that sentence was probably more thought than the film makers put into the movie to begin with. I don’t think they were trying all that hard. But at least I chuckled occasionally and wasn’t bored and sometimes the movie was kinda sorta smart. To be fair, the target audience doesn’t really much include adults – this will probably be one your average, parent will say her kids loved (and I should be ashamed of myself for being such a grouch). Probably true.
