Immediately I was taken out of this movie by my pedantic annoyance at the title. It should be French-Canadian Girl. <shakes tiny fist in impotent, irrelevant rage>. But one could equally argue it should be called Meet The Canadian Parents. Or French-Canadian Parents. I wonder how long I can mentally debate this instead of talking about the movie?
French Girl <sigh> stars Zack Braff as the hunky (?!!?) boyfriend to the titular French (Canadian) Girl played by Evelyne Brochu. They visit her French-speaking family in Quebec and all sorts of <sigh> hijinks ensure… which includes the revelation that her ex-girlfriend – played by Vanessa Hudgens – is lurking about.
Biggest problem: Vanessa Hudgens in girl boss red lipstick mode vs. Zack Braff in Zack Braff mode? Yeah, that’s what I thought. I guess the flick is aspiration for regular schlubs everywhere.
This is a not terrible movie with not terrible situations and mostly not terrible humor. It’s nothing much, really. It’s just familiar rom-com content mixed with some of the old meet-the-parents type yuks. About the only eyebrow raising bit is any time Hudgens slinks onto the screen.
This is a pretty generic but not boring or horrible film. With an endorsement like that, how can you afford NOT to rent it (or hit play if the Gods of Streaming are on your side).
