Frybread Face and Me is a quiet, gentle, thoughtful film about a Native American kid living in San Diego who is sent to live with his extended family on a reserveation in Arizona for the Summer.
It’s not a melodramatic film… it’s more of a hangout as he meets and gets to know his relatives, including a cousin nicknamed Frybread Face and a grandma who only speaks Navajo. Not a lot “happens” but that’s kind of the gentle pleasure of the film.
Arguably maybe too little happens but, then again, the movie is only about 80 minutes long. It is happy to settle down in a beautiful desert and hang with these characters.
I’m not gonna say its profound but I’m also going to praise it for not ending in a shootout or something. If you just want some simple, quiet pleasures based around an American culture you may not know, it’s a comfortable watch.
