Get Away (2024)

Get Away is a theatrically released Shudder film starring (and written by) Nick Frost. That’s interesting in that Nick Frost has a second 2024 Shudder film that I keep meaning to watch called Black Cab. So I guess he’s in the Shudder business now? Seems like a random thing just as it might have been picking which goes to streaming and which to the theater first.

Anyhow, Get Away is a kind of familiar story about an English family taking vacation on an insular Swedish island full of cult-y villagers. You think you’ve seen this before in Midsommar or Wicker Man… and you kinda have. Though this one has a more quirky horror/comedy tone to it.

And a bit of a surprise that’s accompanied by a badass needle drop of Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden. Which, I assure you, is the best part of this whole rather short (an hour 20 minute) film. It’s a cool scene… that the movie doesn’t know how to follow-up on.

Yes, it’s a quirky take on the cult vs. normies film… and it’s jokey stylings are all it really has going for it, and it goes for the same basic joke over and over again. And since it’s so arch and quirky about itself, any care I had about the results fell apart. It’s a one joke movie that loses the bare amounts of humanity that kept me half-interested.

It slid right off a cliff and became redundant. It’s possible its spin on the premise might appeal to you… I can see plenty of people just going for the fun ride and not worrying about anything but the comical amount of blood ‘n gore. But I went from “ok this is alright. I get it.” to “C’mon. I get the joke. Is that all you got?”
