Get Hard is the new Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy about prison rape! Rather, Will Ferrell plays a wealthy stock market guy who is being sent to prison (San Quentin!) for 10 years so he hires the first black guy he sees (Hart) to teach him how to survive prison. Unfortunately, Kevin Hart knows nothing about prison but he needs the money. The movie is 45% race jokes, 45% prison rape jokes, and 10% gay jokes. A lot of this is, as you can imagine, very inappropriate, but I laughed enough at the actors doing their thing. I don’t think any of the offensive comedy is inventive, original, or creative enough to really offend… it’s a lot of lazy cliches and you could argue we’re beyond that… But Ferrell and Hart are doing some great work and they elevate the material with their energy and comedy improv chops.
