Here After is a morose, ponderous sink into gloomy filmmaking that thinks its profound and original but is neither.
It’s about a mother with a teenage daughter who dies for twenty minutes and then miraculously recovers. But is who comes back just the daughter or did she bring along a passenger?
I think I’ve seen this movie before… or at least someone got amnesia and wrote the same old story. You know, the one that warns us against people who die temporarily… because demons. Grand message to impart a traumatized family.
It takes place in Italy which is convenient since all those Catholic priests lurking about. Though it’s not really an exorcism movie and is really more a movie about faith and an actual afterlife. Which is a little unique in a horror flick… actual religious convictions.
Too bad though the movie is just leaden down by its own sense of worth and meaning. It’s not actually much of a horror movie either… just a flick abut grief and a worried mother and it’s mainly just kind of low-key boring. Not aggressively dull… just… slow and somber and, above all, neither fun nor scary nor profound.
It’s just a wet blanket that we’ve kind of seen before… only more serious and less schlocky.
