High-Rise

Checked out High-Rise, a UK movie that what was supposed to be interesting but I thought was a semi-incoherent bunch of violence looking for a point. The premise is the residence of a high-rise apartment building (the rich on the top floors, the less rich on the lower) falls into anarchy with the residents preying on one another. Soon, its pure anarchy with people selling themselves for food, eating dogs, murder, etc.

So its a theme of the upper class vs. the middle class (or the haves and the have lesses) which is a fine theme but this movie made no attempt to actually make reasonable sense. Nor was it good B movie exploitation which would have least justified itself in a low-brow, fun kind of way.

WHY has the building fallen to barbarism? Because the power went out. Not because civilization as a whole fell apart… no, they can leave whenever they want. The cops show up once and nothing happens from it. It’s one great big analogy that isn’t good enough or even original or inventive enough to survive the basic illogic of the scenario. It could work if done with the right touch. But it’s not. It’s quite bad… and boring.
