Home Again

Incidentally, I checked out the new Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy last weekend. And, no, it’s not 2003. This type of romantic comedy has been dead for years but suddenly Home Again is out as kind of counter-programming to the release of It. Didn’t go over so well but, hey, it’s a decent little movie.

So Reese Witherspoon plays the daughter of a deceased 1970s-era wonderkind indie film maker. She’s moved back to her LA home with her two adorable daughters in tow, her husband left behind on the east coast. On her 40th birthday, she chances upon three young filmmakers who she winds up letting live in her guest house. She falls for one of them, they all kind of fall for her. Gentle but uneventful and low-key drama ensues. You smile, you enjoy, or you roll your eyes at the predictability.

You maybe stare too long into Reese Witherspoon’s expressive blue eyes and realize, hey, I kind of like her.

I kind of enjoyed the movie. It is predictable yet it does some interesting things with its Hollywood setting. Too bad it also has a “Will he make it to the school talent show in time” plot that was so by-the-numbers I was amazed they were pulling it off again. But whatever. It’s still low-level charming.

It’s not much of a recommendation but if you are a sucker and are not too critical of romantic comedies, this is up your alley. All others may not want to sign up, I guess.
