Hot Pursuit is the new female buddy road trip movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Sophia Vergara and boy is it a bad movie. Basic premise is that Witherspoon is a by-the-books cop who has to escort Vergara’s mob wife to her court date while being pursued by Mexican hit men and dirty cops. It’s an old and reused premise (the mismatched cop and criminal) but that doesn’t mean the right script and the right talent can’t make it work. Unfortunately, the movie is just perplexingly unfunny throughout. Just head-scratchingly bad. Joke after joke just falls flat… I smiled twice in the movie, the rest of the audience got a handful of laughs but no more. Witherspoon and Vergara aren’t doing the movie any favors with twists on past over-the-top versions of their personas… I’d like to say they were trying hard to elevate the bad script but I’m not sure that’s true. Avoid this.
