Went to see How to be Single, perhaps a movie for which I was not the target demographic. Or maybe I was just grumpy, or tired, or having an existential crisis. But there were moments in this romantic comedy where I wanted to be anywhere damn else than the theater seat surrounded by ladies who were laughing their asses off… but there were also some funny moments and one surprisingly emotional moment pulled off by Damon Wayans Jr. of all people. Not enough to really recommend the movie but perhaps the movie wasn’t marketed to me. Perhaps I should have just watched Deadpool again since I’m a dude and there’s hair on my chest and GRRRR!
Anyhow, this film stars Dakota Johnson, Leslie Mann, Rebel Wilson (shock: playing Rebel Wilson), and Alison Brie. All (or mostly) a good bunch of ladies to put into a film even though they wind up overstuffing the flick and not allowing any one of them to be a particularly well-rounded character (especially Rebel Wilson who is as deep as mud puddle).
I guess if there’s any one thing that works fairly well is that, unlike most romantic comedies, the movie does posit the idea that, yeah, maybe it is ok to be single. At least for a while. Or maybe you can get hitched. Either way – you be you, follow your bliss, choose your crazy.
I dunno – like I said, the movie wasn’t targeted at me and the audience seemed to be pretty into it. <shrug>
