The In Between is a supernatural romance that snuck its way onto Paramount+. When I saw it pop up, I was hoping I’d like it since I can be a romantic fool and I like supernatural jibber jabber, so why not?
The film stars Joey King as the survivor of a car crash that killed her boyfriend. It splits its time between their first encounter and young romance and the aftermath of the crash. That aftermath is a mix of genuine grief and the boyfriend trying to reconnect from the other side (the In Between, you might even say).
When this movie is a gooey little romance complete with a meet cute and stars in its eyes, it was engaging and fun. Joey King and the dude are cute together and the dialog worked. I was enjoying it on the level of a pure silly little romance (that adores INXS Never Tear Us Apart).
When it was about grief nd lost love, it was decent… but the more it drifted towards the supernatural, weirdly the movie completely lost me. Just when it should have been playing in my sandbox, it was just dull and repetitious and overly familiar. Nothing unique or interesting happened and their attempts at showing that love conquers death failed.
Hey, maybe that’s just me. Maybe someone more tuned to youthful exuberance and lost loves or whatever might still enjoy it (or maybe you should just watch Ghost). To me though, the movie slid downhill hard. There’s something decent at the heart of this movie, and then there’s the remaining hour and a half to sit through.
