Like the main characters of this movie, the film does just enough to get by. It isn’t stellar but its consistently amusing enough. I kept wondering if it would be anything more than it is… and it wasn’t. But that’s kinda ok.
The film stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as a couple of random guys who get swallowed up in a caper and have to figure their way out. Too bad they are not too bright but also not too dim. Kind of if you or I got involved in a movie heist and just bumbled our way through it.
And that’s the charm of the movie… just a couple of average dudes just a little out of their league. It’s not an amazing take on the heist film nor is it a particularly hilarious take on an in-too-deep comedy. I didn’t much care for the crime or the corruption or whatever else but I was consistently mostly amused by the quips and asides from these two jokers.
Plus, hey, Hong Chau brought an amusing energy as psychiatrist to these average guys. She’s been lurking around the business enough that I enjoyed seeing her in a more casual, humorous role.
I also wondered if Matt and Casey ever sit around set and chat about what Ben’s up to. Or if Casey and Ben have a family reunion and make fun of Matt. Or some other combination therein. Just a thought I had while just kind of going along with whatever ditzy thing this film was doing.
And, yeah, that’s about it. Reasonably funny. Moving on.
