Intrusion

Avoiding spoilers here, but Intrusion has a mystery at its heart that is so eye-gougingly obvious, I spent most of the movie wondering if I was supposed to be five steps ahead of the main character or not. Was I supposed to be as in the dark as her? I think they intended the reveal to be a shocker, so yeah, I think I was supposed to be surprised.

Intrusion is about a married couple in a fancy-pants modern house who stumble upon a break-in. The wife is busy fleeing when the husband blows the intruders away with a gun she didn’t know he had. She then starts to wonder what’s really going on… and if she’s being gaslit or not.

So I was annoyed that thee main character was so clueless. It was kind of dull and boring movie through the middle half since I was just waiting on her to figure it out. This is a script problem, pure and simple. This could have had a dozen ways to drop hints that were much less obvious than the ones they dropped. This could have worked.

But, to be very charitable, once the shoe drops and the MC gets on the same page as the audience, the film is capable of generating some decent suspense. There is talent in the cat and mouse chase, the reversals, the revenge. It saves the movie by a hair while still leaving a pretty unfortunate film.

Sabotaged by its own script. Hey, there’s a chance that, if you don’t figure out the “twist”, you might just love this movie. Hell, maybe you’ll love it anyway. I was too annoyed and finger drumming through the obvious to really get into it until the end.
