Went to see the new romantic comedy spoof (that is an actual romantic comedy despite the jokes about its own genre) Isn’t It Romantic. Of the three movies that came out for Valentine’s Day, this was the only that was identifiable as a romantic flick.
It’s also the least of the three movies released, though you might enjoy it if you love romantic comedies in general. This movie, in theory, is mocking romantic comedies but in a gentle way and the end lesson is they are worthwhile movies. So even if you are a fan and the movie gently mocks you, it doesn’t matter since it ultimately endorses the genre.
Anyhow, the flick star Rebel Wilson as a cynical lady who doesn’t believe romantic comedies are realistic. She gets bonked in the head and wakes up in a cleaned up New York City where all the men instantly fall for her, her female coworker now hates her, she has a gay best friend, and she’s suddenly adorably clumsy. She now lives in a romantic comedy, basically, and Liam Hemsworth is infatuated with her and gorgeous Priyanka Chopra immediately falls for her average best friend (Admin Devine).
The movie is ok. It’s passable enough for someone who isn’t a huge fan of the genre. It seems to think it’s the first movie that mocks romantic comedies… which it isn’t… and it really only covers around half of the cliches. I was rather bored in the flick but did manage a decent number of chuckles. I think the movie should have been smarter in its ribbing… but I suspect a fan of the genre will love it.
