Keanu

Checked out Key and Peele’s new action comedy Keanu, a film about two suburban nerds who have their adorable kitten stolen and have to front as gangstas to get their kidnapped kitty back. Forget the humans, the kitten is the star (so cute).

I like Key and Peele but I’m hardly a fan so I can’t speak for how good this flick is in comparison to their usual act. That said, I enjoyed the movie. I smiled through a lot of it and laughed out loud a couple times. It’s not as good as I’d hoped but, I figure, it could have been so much worse.

The biggest problem with the movie is that it goes on for an action comedy scene or two too many. They should have peeled (ahem) 20 minutes off the run-time and ended it when it felt like a real ending. But it kept going and started recycling jokes – a little pruning would have helped.

There are some decent action sequences, all done in an over-the-top slow-mo style that apes the action movies this is partly a satire of. For example, it’s kind of a spoof sorta of Keanu Reeves movies, including John Wick (they killed his dog, now he gets revenge). Oh, and a great cameo by Anna Farris playing drug fiend Anna Farris.

Overall, a good movie. It could have been sharper and funnier but as a low level flick that got a lot of smile mileage, I’m happy I saw it.
