The Last Breath starts out well with a pretty good depiction of a WW2 German sub torpedoing an American warship. It’s not great but, by the low standards of shark attack movies, it’s outstanding. Then a shark appears for .5 seconds and it looks terrible. Happily the rest of the sharks look pretty good for a B grade sharksploitation flick.
This one is about modern day divers who find the sunken American ship and decide to explore before reporting it to the authorities. And they get lost in the bowels of the wreck and get shark attacked…. because sharks love to live and lurk and love in shipwrecks, I guess.
This flick could have been a lot better if they’d written less shallow characters with better better dialog. Honestly, the shark was pretty good (for a B grade sharksploitation movie). It was just betrayed by the usual culprit of these movies… throw away characters doing a dumb and getting et. It doesn’t help they are pretty indistinguishable under their SCUBA gear.
Though, hey, credit for all the underwater photography. Similar to 47 Meters Down: Uncaged or The Deep House (not a shark movie), the quality and amount of underwater filming for a low budget film was pretty good.
And the shark itself looked pretty good too… it didn’t have that “what even is a budget?” Z grade CGI effects that a lot of these flicks have. It’s not 100% convincing and sometimes it gets a little rubbery… but it generally pays off. It seems to move believably and is usually painted well enough into the low-lit ship interiors.
The flick almost gets there but I could never give a whoop about any of the characters. I’d say a lot of the film is technically better than No Way Up from earlier this year (a disaster/shark attack film) but I was actually on edge in that one and felt nothing in this one. On the other hand, this flick eats this year’s Something in the Water for (shark) breakfast.
If only there were more to the characters or their plight. It is hardly the worst shark attack movie and my relatively low score need not sway you if you are into the Jaws knockoff subgenre.
