The Lazarus Effect is a horror flick about a bunch of scientists who unwisely decide to create a serum to bring people back from the dead. Unwise, but since they had never seen Re-Animator (or Flatliners), they go ahead and do it. And Very Bad Things happen.
The surprising this is, this movie is actually pretty good. The first half is kind of dumb and not super compelling but once things start to go wrong and they bring someone back from the dead, it makes a sharp turn and proves the director or the cinematographer can put together some genuine creepy scenes and eerie moments. Shout out to Olivia Wilde and her makeup team for giving her some unsettling and scary looks.
Probably the most interesting thing is that they movie is playing with mad science and suggests resurrected people might be demonic… or they might have a bad case of Lucy (from the movie Lucy). So while it’s not super deep or even scientifically literate, at least it tries.
So, yeah, it’s a middle-ground horror flick you probably won’t see but, if you do, it’s a lot better that expected.
