And saw The Lego Movie, a super cute, very funny animated flick that manages to not be a giant advertisement to Lego the brand, but a giant banner pointing directly at your childhood… at whatever age you were when you played with Lego.
For me, the most wonderful moment was realizing 1980s Space Guy’s NASA-like logo was partially rubbed off and the chin-portion of his helmet was cracked because THAT ALWAYS HAPPENED with those minifigs back in the day. I can only assume that a lot of the other Lego bits ‘n pieces are accurate to their time frames and characters (not being INTO Legos since the early 80s, I can’t say for sure).
Regardless, this is a movie kids and their parents will love and it’s for more than just nostalgia… there’s some genuinely funny stuff in the movie that will appeal to all ages. And, hey, Dumbledor and Gandalf share a scene together as do Michaelangelo and Michaelangelo… and much of the Justice League so that’s fun on a geeky level itself.
Ultimately this is hardly my favorite animated film – it gets a little long and the story is fine but not incredible. It does have a nice twist (slightly telegraphed) that has a nice message and some warm, genuine heart (especially considering the actor involved). It’s good, joyful fun.
