Little Siberia

Little Siberia is a movie that’s trying to say something and be something but what its trying to say or be is too convoluted for me any little brain. A couple points for trying, a couple taken off for failing.

It’s about a small, frozen town in Finland which has had some close encounters with meteorites, one of which is their museum. The local pastor is having an existential crisis over the cosmological scale that brought the rock to his small town. Meanwhile, someone is trying to steal the rock out from under him.

Probably too many other problems in this small town for me to care. I admire and theoretically enjoy the nattering over huge galaxy-wide concerns and how that relates to God and our measly lives. Good premise for a character’s anxiety, maybe not so well connected to much else in a way that satisfied me.

It’s allegedly a crime comedy but the crime never really hits until the last act and, by that time, I couldn’t care less. Just the same with all of the pastor’s other problems and issues with the small town. I just didn’t care so much that I’m going very low on the rating. I was bored.

Maybe there’s more to this film that you might get out of it. For me, it’s a great big nothingburger trying and failing to be profound. A more charitable Netflix fan might give it a higher score but I personally struggle to find a reason why.

Score: 58
