Loop Track is film about an introverted paranoid New Zealnder with social anxiety problems that make me look like a goddamn social butterfly. All he wants is to go for a long multi-day hike by himself, get away from the virus that is people and experience some quiet. And I’m like… same dude. But he keeps running into clueless outgoing ninnies who won’t leave him along on this Loop Track hike.
As a thriller about the least reliable paranoid narrator, I rather enjoyed this film. It probably spends too much time trying to gin up mystery in order to keep its thriller tropes going… but when it’s finally time to throw-down the social anxiety gauntlet, the film does a very good job.
When we actually learn “what’s really going on”, the answer is surprising, kind of cool, and a little goofy all at the same time. It’s also very much in-line with the flick’s New Zealand location so good on them for taking a sudden left turn.

It turns out the first hour of the film was a bait and switch for an actual creature feature horror film. It comes as an out-of-nowhere surprise because the film was suggesting it was either a person or our main character just being an unreliable idiot. But, as I hinted above, the creature is neat and apt for NZ… plus a little goofy.

So, yeah, this is a pretty enjoyable film. Sometimes its suspense is great but also sometimes it feels like it’s spinning its wheels to get to a 90 minute runtime. If it weren’t for that, I’d probably rank it higher for some fun suspense and a pretty solid final act.
