Lowlifes is one you’ve seen before… at least to begin with. City folk on vacation take a wrong turn and encounter some backwoods lowlifes. Soon games are being played and the blood flows. Only this one has a surprise that turns the sub-genre on its head. I won’t say what… spoilers!
While this is a film about killers preying on innocent folk, it introduces some campy black humor with at least one of the psychos. It’s a little familiar if you’ve seen certain other films that play with a certain slasher stereotype. It’s amusing.
The film itself isn’t particularly scary though it has a decent amount of blood ‘n gore. It’s kind of on a low budget so you can see the seams, mainly in the production values. The acting seems all right, though some of the hilljacks don’t have the expected Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel feel. Maybe that’s to their credit for not going full hillbilly.
For being almost exactly ninety minutes, the movie goes on too long, especially in its final act. And also in its final scenes where it really didn’t know where to end.
This is a pretty decent film just on the edge of overly long and tiresome. But it’s got enough good in its dark comedy and variation on the sub-genre that I’ll give it a pass.
