Am I bad person to say “meh” to the new Mandella (Long Walk to Freedom) movie? Am I a horrible person or just someone who kind of thought the movie was rote and boring? Yeah, a movie with space marines can be great and a heartfelt biopic drama about apartheid can be dull. Call it like ya see it. If you want a better movie about Mandella – though it doesn’t tell the same story or cover the same early bases – Invictus with Morgan Freeman is a better movie (though it’s problematic in that it provides some convenient white guys to be the heroes too – but they are soccer players so it probably all equals out). Anyhow, this movie is more of an exploration of the man’s early (more violent) days, imprisonment, and release and the politics of ending apartheid. It means well, but it’s just not told well.
