A pretty atmospheric and eerie slow burn domestic horror flick about a train-wreck of a woman who goes home to visit her estranged mom. Mom is acting a little funny too… and so are the locals… but maybe it’s just the years away from home talking. Or maybe it’s the black tar in her dreams and in her body.
This film has a creepy vibe without getting abruptly scary, at least in the first two acts. There’s a curious standing mystery going on that it was kind of fun working out. It’s clear something is going on and that might be in the lead character’s drunken coked-up nights… or something might actually be happening. Certainly mom is acting strange.
This isn’t the best of the elevated horror but it holds together and remains interesting throughout. I was reasonably engrossed by the atmosphere and found the finale held together pretty well.
