I saw and enjoyed the original Megamind way back in the day but I haven’t seen it since and don’t remember it well. But something is off about this new film… and not the cheap animation, different voice cast, or even that it’s terrible… it’s the characters and backstory but I can’t pinpoint what. Not that it matters… its got bigger problems.
The flick is about the newly superhero’d Megamind and how he has to defeat his old wrecking crew The Doom Syndicate. They are a bunch of supervillains who think Megamind has the city fooled and is still evil.
Yeah… none of the original cast is back. The real problem isn’t that the choice stinks of cost savings, but because Megamind worked so well because of Will Ferrell. Things like mispronouncing MetroCity felt very Will Ferrell… like maybe it was ad-libbed in the booth. Losing him loses a lot of Megamind.
The movie looks cheap. Definitely very old style CGI, especially in the barely detailed city backdrops. The film makes the mistake of showing a couple clips from the original film and WOW… budget has not been kind to this flick.
Plus, hell, it’s just boring and not very funny. I didn’t smirk at an occasional joke that I had plenty of time to analyze while the rest of the movie kept on chugging.
I know. I know. It’s Dreamworks Kids so we should all lower our expectations… but c’mon. The first film worked for a crusty old adult too… is effort too much to ask?
