Mid90s

Mid90s is a new movie written and directed by comedian/actor Jonah Hill. It’s about skaters who hang out. In the Mid 90s. That’s it. End of story. Packing up and going home…

Righto. So… umm… it stars a bunch of unknown teens who skate and… it’s like, you know, the 90s. They hang out. And talk. And skate. And play SNES and PS1. And it’s the 90s. The main character is younger than the rest and has to prove himself cool… though the older teens don’t seem to care if he’s cool or not. And it’s the 90s.

I guess it’s a coming of age film. The kid has awkward sex with a much more mature high school girl. He smokes, drinks, and takes drugs. His mom does not approve. They hang out. The skate. It’s the 90s.

The movie bored me to death. Maybe because I’m not a “90s kid” and not a skater so the nostalgia is lost on me. But there’s plenty of coming of age movies where not a lot happen but the movie is still good. I point to Dazed and Confused as a fine example. I wasn’t a teen in the 70s and that movie still worked. Not enough interesting conversations or events happen in the Mid90s. I guess they have Blockbuster night?
It’s 82 minutes long, with credits. It runs some length of time and just… ends. Nothing is learned, nothing much happens. One of the kids has been making a video so we get clips from it… which looks like any skateboarding video of the time. It’s Art?
I’m all out of things to say, really.
