Checked out My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the sequel to the (oh jeez) 19 (!!) year old original film written and starring Nia Vardalos. Everyone is back in this film – all the old crazy relatives are older and crazier and still using Windex to defrost car locks and to cure a bad hip. As a person who basically enjoyed the first film but haven’t thought about it since, much less seen it again, this is a decent, if not particularly necessary, sequel.
It has a fun idea… the main character’s parents (one of the crazy old Greek couples) find out their priest never signed their marriage certificate so now they have to stop arguing with each other and agree to get married. And the whole crazy family has to pitch in. Meanwhile, our main character’s high school daughter is embarrassed by her extended crazy family and wants to go to college (*gasp*) out of state.
It’s a shaggy, rambling unfocused movie but it has cute and charming moments. There were a number of jokes, I suspect, that were call-backs to the original which I’d clearly forgotten, much less the relationships between some of the characters (“wait,” I said to myself, “That guy is John Corbett’s dad?”). But if you are a fan of that movie, you’ll probably dig this one just fine.
