Neighborhood Watch works due to the charismatic performances of its leads… one kind of doing his usual cool guy thing, the other a bit more manic. Pair them together and one cool factor smashes up against another’s mania and makes a fairly entertaining script hum.
The flick stars Jack Quaid as a manic, delusional guy on all the pharmaceuticals who sees a young lady kidnapped. The voice in his head tells him he can’t do anything about it so he turns to ex-security guard neighbor played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan who wants to feel needed.
This is a pretty solid odd couple / buddy-cop (adjacent) flick. Morgan is kind of playing his usual tough guy cool character but with more desperation and failure lurking under the hood. Jack Quaid often plays a little manic, but he turns it up to eleven and I’m less sure of him. I didn’t like spending time with his character but that just makes the performance good.
The plot and and its various moving parts are fine. There are some cops who don’t believe Quaid’s story so that lends some tension as Quaid tries to prove he’s not THAT crazy. He really did see the kidnapping… or at least Morgan’s character hopes so.
This is a sold entertainment brought to life by two solid, capable actors doing variations on their usual character types. It’s fun and funny and a little annoying at times but it gets by on what it sets out to do. So good for them.
