Watched the documentary Never Surrender on Amazon Prime. This is a doc about the making of – and the ongoing fandom for – the movie Galaxy Quest. Now, I liked Galaxy Quest… it’s a fun, fairly smart movie. But not sure why it needed a documentary… but it was “free” on Prime so I gave it a look.
And, yeah, it’s a documentary about the making of Galaxy Quest. Production, casting, reception – kind of a by-the-book movie documentary. Nothing special. Some new information for me which isn’t a surprise since it’s not like I followed the film or its fandom.
The fandom angle is apparently what instigated the doc. Apparently the fans have been keeping the movie’s memory going with conventions and cosplay (which is pretty meta if you think about it). That part of the doc was a little off-putting since it was so laudatory about the fans and their interviews were equally laudatory about the film. With that kind of fan coverage, there was a basic guarantee this wouldn’t be a “warts and all” doc.
So… yeah… I guess it’s a fine documentary. Does what it sets out to do. Whether anyone who isn’t a cosplaying superfan needs apply, I’m unconvinced. And this from a sci-fi nerd.
