Next Exit is a genre-bender… a romance, a romantic comedy, a comedy sci-fi road trip that never really coalesces into something great. But I think they put in the effort to focus on the emotional life of two characters and while that may not be what I signed up for, it’s a decent result.
The film presents a world where proof of the afterlife has been scientifically confirmed. In order to explore the implications, scientists need volunteers to die so their experiences can be monitored. Our two leads are just such volunteers on a cross-country road trip of exploration and discovery.
Proof of an afterlife has a huge implications to the entire human race so what better way to explore it than putting two people in a car. Sure, make the exploration of themes more personal while saving huge money on the budget. I wish the film had more to say and/or provided less abrasive characters with more fascinating things to say or think about.
The actors are good and the film does what it sets out to do… I was just hoping for something more profound or interesting. But I was reasonably entertained and, once the leads stopped being angry all the time, the film got a little more watchable.
