I’m happy to say I saw A Goofy Movie back in 95 and didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it… I basically gave it the equivalent of 3 stars and mostly forgot it. But then folks who grew up with it (which I absolutely did not) have super fond memories enough that I was only half surprised to see this doc on Disney+.
It’s about the making of the movie and how Katzenberg didn’t get it nor was it using the same staff that was busy with the Goof Troop tv show. The director still has a crate of old VHS tapes about the making of it which half the doc is based on. The other half being modern memories so it makes for a unique back and forth doc.
And I was up for it for quite some time, including hints of a conflict with the tv team and Katzenberg himself. I liked this semi-warts-n-all take on a silly half-forgotten B tier theatrical release.
But then Disney can’t just leave well enough alone. The final act reminds us this is a carefully crafted bunch of back-patting over a property most of them had probably forgotten about too. On top of that, it has an uncomfortably long tail where they can’t seem to decide when to cut to credits.
Still, a good doc, especially if you love A Goofy Movie. I remember liking it but remember almost nothing about it… so this was a good enough refresher.
