Also took the opportunity to see an early (yet late) show of the new Spike Lee (for some reason) joint Oldboy… a remake of a Korean film of the same name that’s so messed up, so dark, so mean spirited that it makes you question the innate goodness of the human species. I can’t say for sure how shocking this remake is since I knew the story going in, though I think they did a decent job of trying to twist the ending a little bit. I will say this version is slightly less “courageous” than the Korean version… though given that it’s still a pretty dark, messed up movie, some people might not mind. What is Oldboy? It’s about a guy who gets locked up in a fake motel room for 20 years and he doesn’t know why, or who has locked him up, or much of anything. When he’s randomly released, he goes on a quest for vengeance and answers. Fans of the Korean version should know there IS an octopus (sorta) and there is a hallway fight scene that’s slightly more elaborate but less messy/chaotic (and hammers are used). This is a good movie but I can’t judge how effective or shocking it is… though I can say it’s not for people with a weak stomach.
