Well, see you on the FBI watchlist. Decided to watch Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour concert film on Netflix. As I’ve said in the past, I’m not a big fan of concert films but figured she only has two albums so odds are I’ll know most of the songs (since I own them… yes I’m that old).
Now, I’m very mixed on the concert for one main reason. The crowd. They know the songs by heart and they sing LOUDLY along with her. And, hey, I know part of the fun of a concert is being with thousands of your best friends as you all vibe along. But the people who mixed the performance for Netflix could have upped her mic and downed their voices since you barely here Olivia in half the songs.
And, hey, maybe that’s exactly what the fans want and I’m a grump grump old who just doesn’t get it. Probably true… I’m too old to be in her fan club so maybe I should just shut up. But I won’t, partly since I’m typing and not talking (har). The fan interactions were distracting and kept me away from Olivia Rodrigo… who I enjoy as a pop (and rock) star.
She and her army of screaming fans sing a lot of her big hits, many of which I like. I appreciated her all-female band and how they’d rock out, especially to songs like Brutal (what a riff). I was allowed entry into her music through her rock sound and how she straddles the line with pop. Plus she’s got a lot of stage presence and charisma, though she could cough up a lung and the audience would eat it up regardless.
So, yeah, I enjoyed this flick enough to give it an extra half star even though the part of me that hated the mix wants to take it away. But it’s a good performance by a talented lass and it’s just another opportunity to get me on an FBI watch list. Neato!
