One of Them Days

The only thing I knew about this flick was the poster at the theater… didn’t know the plot nor the actors. Figured it was probably a comedy based on the title and poster… though for the first ten minutes of the film, I was wondering if it’d be a time loop movie (just one of them days). But no, it’s a straight up non-sci-fi comedy… and a pretty good one too.

It stars Keke Palmer and SZA as roommates who have about nine hours to come up with money for the rent. This leads them on a buddy comedy tour of the neighborhood, running into odd ducks, gangsters, and the white girl who moved into the apartment complex.

And I laughed. It wasn’t an auto-laugh though since I wasn’t feeling Palmer’s nervous energy babble at first. But she grew on me until I was barking out a “hah” every now and again. The other characters are amusing and you gotta love a gangster who loves his job.

It’s not the funniest flick ever, but given its a January release, I was genuinely surprised and pleased. And my audience – as small as it was for a Friday afternoon – was having their own good time too. This flick just works.
