The new political satire Our Brand is Crisis is a black comedy about political consultants and how, guys, political campaigns are underhanded and full of manipulation! I bet you didn’t know that already so see this movie and watch dirty pool being played between political operatives.
So, yeah, Sandra Bullock, Anthony Mackie, and Colin Hanks head down to Bolivia to help a random candidate win the presidential election (using advertising and dirty tricks). It’s meant to be a satire but it’s largely not very funny and certainly isn’t telling us anything we don’t already know.
And then, at the end, the movie wants to be serious and suggest a better approach to politics. You get off the ride and forge your own path. Fine. I’d like to see that ending in a better movie or at least a more consistent movie since, by the time it decides to get serious, I’d already checked out. Its sudden turn of cheek was just out of place and corny aggrandizing.
It’s not a terrible movie, it’s just not well focused and not funny and can’t decide what it is.
