Outbreak (2024)

Sometimes the onus of having a handful of artsy movies staring at ya just makes you wanna watch a short zombie movie instead. And here we… the cleverly titled Outbreak. It’s about a park ranger dealing with an outbreak of rabies which, of course, jumps to people, turning them into fast zombies.

The lead actor kept giving me a “hey it’s that guy” vibes… a character actor clearly better than the material he was in. Finally realized he was Billy Burke… mustache dad from the Twilight movies. And here you thought those were the worst movies for an actor to be stuck in.

He’s basically the only reason this B movie gets any regard… mainly because he’s given some actually clever and amusing dialog, but also because he’s got a hangdog “what am I doing in this shit?” look to him that made me laugh. Not sure if it was acting out the scenario or if he was just hoping his paycheck would clear.

The zombies are fast and know how to flail in water since they can’t swim and try to break a garrote around their necks. So not too stupid as zombies go. Their makeup is decent and they have some contortionist movements that aren’t bad.

But they are stuck in a very low budget, very generic zombie movie. Nothing too exciting or remotely scare happens and then it has a bullshit ending. Though 15% of me kind of appreciates the “twist” for just being slightly different than most zombie movies. The rest of me doesn’t get why they bothered other than “what a clever boy I am” writing.

This isn’t a good movie. Surprise surprise. It does have some writing that shows talent and an actor with more talent than the movie deserves. But otherwise, meh. You’ve seen it all before.
