Poms

I was the youngest person by a decade or two when I went to see the new “old women at retirement community decide to be cheerleaders” movie Poms. You know, just another movie with the same generic plot! But it looked relatively harmless and Dianne Keaton stars and I’ve always liked her so gave it a shot.

So, yeah, Keaton moves into a retirement community, fully willing to hate everyone and everything there. She forms an oldster cheerleading squad, possibly out of spite toward the snobby community manager who rejects her club idea out of hand. But the old ladies get help from a teen cheerleader and they show everyone what they got. The relationship between that teen and the six or seven older ladies has a lot of heart and charm.

The movie is reasonably amusing. It doesn’t have many stakes and it struggles to maintain any drama… but it’s lightly funny and means well. Not a strong recommendation but if you are closer to the target demographic and if you are female and if you love Dianne Keaton, I think it’s right up your alley.
