Checked out Andy Samburg/The Lonely Island’s new movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. When I saw the trailer for this one, I figured it had equal chance to be hilarious or a total disaster. Happy to say I laughed more than I didn’t laugh – which isn’t to say all the jokes worked but enough of them did to thumbs up the flick.
The movie is mostly just an excuse to promote the Lonely Island’s song satires… the Lonely Island being most famous for Lazy Sunday, D In a Box, I’m on a Boat, and others. Here they give us some more great (or terrible?) songs like the one about Bin Laden, The Mona Lisa, and a deadly spot on Mackelmore satire. Pretty good take on the pop music scene in general with a lot of cameos by people like Questlove, Justin Timberlake (of course), Jimmy Fallon (of course), Nas, Carrie Underwood, Snoop Dogg and Martin Sheen (OF COURSE!!).
Also happy to note that it had a plot built into its faux-documentary structure. Not an amazing or creative plot but a little more heartfelt than I expected. Not that the resolution was a shocker or anything. But still, nice try.
So, yeah, it’s a good little comedy. You could do worse. If you like The Lonely Island, no reason not to check it out.
