Riff Raff

Bill Murray as a hit man? Pete Davidson too? What is this, some kind of stunt casting classic? Sure, just toss in Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, and Jennifer Coolidge while yer at it. This flick is made for its cast… and its mostly well-written (if exhausting) crime family drama comedy script.

It stars Ed Harris and Gabrielle Union as a married couple who both have a past full of tragedy and comedy. When his son from another mother and his very pregnant girlfriend show up, he knows something is wrong. Enter the SNL hit men casually going about their business and we have quite an ensemble and mixed up dark comedy.

This is a very talky film with a decently convoluted script and set of characters. Following who is married to who, who is divorced from who, and why certain characters are so obsessed with evolutionary biology is a a fun and welcome job. Not saying it’s actually a complicated film, but that its complicated relationships are at the beating heart of it. It’s a fun dynamic between all of these characters. It works.

That is, until maybe it has one too many flashbacks and complications to the point I just wanted the film to get on with it. I think maybe everything is important to know, but it keeps introducing facts well into a third act that felt like it needed to cook more and simmer less.

But I had a good enough time with it. It’s very close to a higher rating and, on any other day, might have just squeaked over the edge. I enjoyed the cast, I enjoyed its odd comedy, and it was reasonably fun figuring out why things were going bad. Maybe another pass on the script to keep the pacing up would have helped.
