I admit I rented Roadkill because it was a chance to get in on another early 2024 release. But also because it has the plot of an updated version of The Hitcher… a young woman on a road trip picks up a mysterious hitchhiker and things get bloody. There’s seedy potential in a plot like that.
This flick is the textbook definition of “For the kind of movie it is”. For the kind of movie this is, it gets a pretty good score. I’m not gonna argue its as good as better made movies with similar scores… but for a low budget grungy exploitation thriller, it’s surprisingly watchable.
The flick takes some unexpected turns and has a pretty solid performance from its lead actors. There’s a couple of fed up local cops who add some interesting flair to the film as well. The score has a cool synth vibe.. plus, for such a low budget film, they managed some pretty solid drone shots of cars on the run.
Some of those car chases and hand-to-hand fighting are a little tepid and poorly paced though. Its back story is in, shall we say, bad taste and might annoy people. I’m making allowances for low budget filmmaking though.
Look… if you don’t want to take a risk on a B movie thriller, don’t. But if you can enjoy some modern hard-scrabble, low budget grimy grindhouse that might remind you of other road thrillers, you might enjoy it.
