Room 203 is a horror show that – like many others – leans on the crutch of dark room = scary and then forgets to be scary. I shudder to think what these filmmakers would do if anyone turned on the goddamn lights… and then I think of some of the best scary movies and how well-lit they sometimes can be.
Anyhow, Room 203 is about a couple of giggly college students who move into an apartment with a great view, a stained-glass window, and apparently no lights. Oh, and a hole in the wall that the camera can linger on ominously. Soon spooky shit happens.
To be fair, sometimes the lingering shots of the hole in the wall generate a mild spooky mood. And then you begin to realize that that’s all this movie has… a whole lot of time-wasting and wheel-spinning as we murkily lurk our way to the third act where All Is Revealed.
And by the time we get there, all I can think is, “Oh. Is that what this is about?” and we get Obvious Creeper being obvious and then some spooks and haunts that don’t do anything you haven’t seen before.
This flick barely does enough to save it from total mediocrity. Decent, if annoying, acting and some occasionally creepy moments aren’t enough. And, for god’s sake people, invest in some lightbulbs.
