So… Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty should have been a better movie. As it stands, it’s a good enough movie with some occasionally brilliant, inspiring, and beautiful moments and scenery but the overall quest or trek is often undercut by a hurried and sporadic feeling that hurts whatever life-affirming message they are going for. It kind of comes off as more trite than deep. I also had the feeling I’d already seen this movie when it was called Joe vs. the Volcano – a rather different story and tone but just as much a quest for meaning (capital M) with dark, comedic tones. Walter Mitty is a noble effort and I commend it for trying. And for some really random product placement… eHarmony and Papa Johns in particular.
