Significant Others is a sci-fi/thriller/horror flick about a couple who go on a hiking trip in the Pacific Northwest. Only something isn’t quite right with the woods. Something eerie, something out-of-place.
The first half of this movie is a very intriguing horror story that which hints at questions of identity and self. It’s like the screenwriter said, “I saw Annihilation. Let’s do more of that but on a budget.”
Then, when it reveals its hand, it’s disappointingly conventional. It also has a random tonal problem with some dialog that might have been aiming for unsettling but wound up comedic. I’m not sure that was intent since it’s the first time the movie has any real comedic tone… and it’s temporary and in a spot that should be horrific. It’s a jarring miscalculation.
I was ultimately left disappointed with this film. It feels like it was all setup and then it didn’t know what to do with itself. It kind of has an introspective, character-driven finale but also not really. I really wish I could recommend this movie… but only half a movie only gets you so far.
