Checked out Sing Street, the latest movie from the Irish filmmaker who made the movies Once (which won best song for Falling Slowly a few Oscars ago) and Begin Again (a perfectly charming movie about music too). Sing Street is a film set in 1985 about an Irish teen (15) in Belfast who wants to impress an older girl (16) by telling her he’s in a band and she should be in his music video (just like Duran Duran). Like those two other movies, this is a movie about music, song, and the desire to make and play art.
Specifically, it’s about the time in your life where girls, rock ‘n roll, following your dream, and all those mad things you did – or did not do – at that age. It’s about breaking away , finding your friends, and convincing the love of your young life to come away with you.
This is a really charming, sweet, and funny movie with some good original songs. It’s in limited release and, even if you haven’t heard of those other movies, this is still one to see if you were ever young and had dreams. Which I suspect you were and did. Check it out.
