Solitary

I sometimes wonder why I do this to myself… why we do this to ourselves. Odds were very low this was going to be a good movie, yet I hit play with hope that this movie, this time I’ll have stumbled upon a diamond in the rough.

Nope. Solitary is sometimes an admirable attempt at making a single-location sci-fi thriller. But it’s so damn cheap and boring that it can’t even reach any heights of note.

The flick is about a criminal (“I didn’t do it!”) who is being transported to the colonies… not Australia, another star system. But something has gone wrong with the space pod/prison cell and he (and his cellmate) are trapped in orbit with limited resources.

It’s a problem of place movie and not a particularly effective one. There are some decent ideas, I suppose. But so much of it is shot basically or amateurishly (the attempts at action are grim) and the script does no favors. No big ideas to explorer, no creative thoughts to fill the 90 minutes. The movie is largely just boring with a decent idea or two occasionally poking its head out of the ground.

No, this wasn’t a revelation. It’s just another failure.
