I had this on my mental “to watch” list for awhile but finally decided to give it a whirl for the season. Didn’t realize it was an anthology film… and was pleasantly surprised that more of the segments worked than didn’t. And that they take a Pulp Fiction-like approach with timelines and interconnected stories. That’s better than most anthologies that usually just toss in a weak frame story.
The film is about a stretch of road and a nameless town that appears to be haunted by demons or ghosts or really eager film-makers. We get a series of stories with some character continuity that drive the whole film. One story is about cultists, one the nightmare of running over someone on the road, one is a crime story, and another about demons and ghosts.
I particularly liked the segment about the driver who hits a person and has to find help. It actually felt like a real nightmare and something that could (mostly) happen. It works on multiple levels and is the shining star of the pic.
Other stories struggle here and there but are generally solid. Which is how I feel about the movie as a whole. I’m happy I liked it after sitting on it for so long.
