Spotlight is the new movie about the Boston Glove’s expose on the child abuse in the catholic church from the early 2000s. It’s very much a buy-the-book newspaper investigation without a lot of hyberbole… it’s all about the process, walking and talking, interviews, talking to judges and lawyers, etc. There’s no secret meetings in underground parking garages or anything that would add to the (melo)drama. Which is a bit of a problem – it’s a well done and well acted drama but it is just one conversation after another without any one being exceptionally better than the last.
But it is a good enough movie… the part of me that wanted more suspense or whatnot was beaten down by the part that admired a movie that was about the process and not interested in going over the top or adding extra movie-like drama. Great cast too – Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, and Stanely Tucci.
