Starry Eyes is a Hollywood navel gazing horror/thriller that starts well, stumbles, and falls off a cliff. And yet I can totally understand why some people would love it… but it just got too fixated on staring at itself in the mirror for me to connect with it.
The flick is about an aspiring Hollywood actress who gets her big audition. She’s asked to do things she doesn’t want to do… and something, something Hollywood cult.
What’s “really going on” is a bit nebulous but you can easily piece it together as a trite cliché about Hollywood stardom. It’s familiar… if taken to an extreme. It’s ego tripping at the gates of Hell.
I didn’t hate the protagonist originally, but she turns into a terrible person and then, despite some excellent makeup work, she goes too far (and probably should have gone to a doctor). It’s certainly a good performance at the expense of me being invested in the character.
It a horror movie for those aspiring to become a famous. And the rest of the world can maybe empathize, but the movie goes too far with its very inward gazing horror that it left me behind.
