So… yeah… Starship Troopers 3 came out – another direct-to-dvd sequel.
The 2nd flick was alright – basically something you’d see on Sci-Fi Channel (but slightly better) but it was clearly made on a super low budget and really just felt like Alien with bugs.
This 3rd flick is quite a bit better even if it does show its low budget in some less than state-of-the-art FX and one too many scenes of people walking across a desert (save on budget: don’t build a set!).
But, you know, it’s actually a pretty good flick within its limitations and its very much in the spirit of the first movie – they brought back the satire and they added some interesting mental conflict… I mean, in the first movie, the humans were a bunch of jingoistic apes… but the bugs were bugs and they did want to kill us so you had to root for the human morons and, frankly, the movie kicked ass on its own level. This movie does the same: the human propaganda machine declares no peace will be acceptable until the bugs are dead, there are protesters who say peace at any price, and then there’s the bugs who want us all dead. The point being, this sequel plays on the same sub-level of satire and ethical/moral issues the first movie did – but also blows up bugs real good.
