Succubus (2024)

Succubus is a weird mixture of trashy, sexy, sensual, surreal, icky, campy, and wired. I didn’t expect much going in… mainly maybe a little trashy fun, but honestly not a lot of hope for a good film. But I was surprised by how much I was drawn into it.

It’s about a guy separated from his wife, stuck home watching the baby. He gets some bad advice from his macho man friend about dating apps… and immediately gets matched with a hot, nubile young woman who wants him… all of him.

Part of the film is a Screen Life flick where we watch his laptop screen as he signs up for things, chats with his friend, and swipes right one too many times. But only about half the film uses the gimmick, the other half being a traditional narrative. I’m not sure why they saw the need to emulate a movie like Searching nor do I get why they abandoned it… but the mix actually worked pretty well.

It’s just too bad the title of the movie gives away the game. It’s obvious who the hot young lady on the screen really is so the fun is waiting for the hapless dude to figure it out. Which it does with delightful fun and vigorous sensuality. It’s surprisingly sexy while playing in camp and gore. But also weird surrealism as the woman plays with his mind.

For a movie called Succubus, there’s plenty of flesh… though way more of the hanging dong kind than the female variety. While the girl is hot and scantily clad, I don’t think we actually see any naughty bits… at least not until she reveals her true form. But good on the men for standing up (ahem) and risking it all on screen.

And speaking of her true form, pretty good makeup application too. Nice horns for the horny, you might say. Some of the other practical gross-out gore is… wow… ahem… ick factor five here, especially for the dudes in the audience.

The cast includes Ron Pearlman and Roseanna Arquette but both are just extended cameos. It’s nice to see them, but the real leads are Brandon (Not Harry Potter) Bradley and Rachel (not Leigh) Cook.

This flick is naughty and surreal and sensual and tense and wicked in turns. Absolutely a fun bit of better-than-you-expect trash. Great Halloween fun for the less evolved grown-ups.
