I kind of dug the way this flick starts with this wild and cool soundtrack. And I thought it was working fairly well as a movie for a bit… and then less well, and then less well some more… until it spiraled into a mess.
The flick is about two married couples who meet up at a cabin in the woods. One couple has kids, the other doesn’t. In order to help the marriage of the couple with kids, the childless couple takes them for the night. And things get weird when they realize “There’s something wrong with the Children!”… <insert dramatic sting>
What’s wrong with these kids is that they are in an evil kid movie with a soundtrack better than the movie itself. A cool soundtrack that unfortunately has to do double duty as an overdramatic stinger for lame jump scares. Seriously, the more the movie overdoes the music to convince me its scary, the more I rolled my eyes.
This movie just kind of runs out of steam… and then gets really silly when it thinks its being weird and scary. When they kinda sorta reveal what’s actually wrong with the children, it’s theoretically interesting and different but is portrayed very ridiculously and corny. Thank god they never actually SHOW what’s wrong with the children since I doubt they could have pulled off an effective makeup or CGI job.
Instead we just get a lot of evil kid hooey… or maybe possessed child hoooey… or maybe changelings. Whatever these kids are up to, they are basically up to cheap attempts at scares and a whole lot of random stuff that never really makes sense in the long run.
Eventually it just putters to a halt and I had to roll my eyes and groan every time the movie refuses to just end. I wanted to like this movie a little bit… but it just was unconvincing, repetitive, random, and tedious.
